This katipa beadband comes from Sumba, Indonesia, and dates to the early 20th century. It is made of glass beads and was originally part of a Sumba sarong (tube cloth).
The band features a pattern with animal motifs, ( monkeys? and snakes) a common element in Sumbanese design. These motifs are often linked to local beliefs and traditions. The beadwork shows careful craftsmanship and balanced composition.
Katipa beadbands were worn as part of traditional dress, especially during ceremonies and important events.
