Kodi Region, West Sumba, Indonesia
Cotton, warp ikat
Length: 235 cm, width: 114 cm:
Collected before 1939
This traditional hinggi comes from the Kodi region of West Sumba. It is a ceremonial men’s mantle.
The cloth is woven from handspun cotton and dyed with natural colors: deep indigo, soft white, and warm brown.
A key symbol in this textile is the mamuli motif, an omega-shaped ear ornament that represents life, fertility, and ancestral heritage. It is one of the most important symbols in Sumba culture.
Hinggi were worn by men during rituals, funerals, and important social ceremonies. They were also exchanged as valuable gifts and passed down through generations. The condition is very good.
