This Savu sarong is a fine example of traditional Indonesian warp ikat. It was woven by hand from cotton and dyed with natural pigments, it was made for ceremonial use by women on Savu Island.

The cloth is woven in tube form, as worn traditionally, and shows the strong graphic patterns that make Savu textiles so distinctive. These sarongs were used in rituals, social ceremonies, and as important family heirlooms.
