19th Century Dayak blowpipe, sumpitan, from Kalimantan, Indonesia. It is made from a single piece of wood. The spear point and the foresight are secured along the exterior of the blowpipe with rattan bindings, allowing the weapon to function as a blowgun and a spear.
Dayak blowpipes were used for hunting birds and small game in the forests of Borneo. Darts were blown through the long wooden shaft with great accuracy, often using poisoned tips.
