This men’s mantle was made in the Endeh region on the south coast of Flores in Indonesia. It was collected before 1939. It is woven from handspun cotton and dyed in natural indigo blue.

The textile features a warp ikat design with a central patola motif and repeated Tree of Life patterns.

The presence of the patola motif reflects historic trade connections between Indonesia and India, where similar patterns were highly valued.
