Large traditional Asmat braided bag (esa or ese), handcrafted in West Papua in the late 20th century. Made from braided barkcloth and decorated with black and red natural pigments.

The bag has abstract patterns and two stylized human figures.. The bag has likely served a practical purpose, used for carrying wood, food, or forest materials. Its size suggests it functioned as a backpack.

This piece is in good condition and comes from a Dutch auction house.
