This woven basket with sliding lid was made by the Tarëno (Trio) and Waiwai peoples of Suriname and northern Brazil in the early 20th century. It is constructed using scraped and unscraped mukru strips, creating natural color variation in the wickerwork.
The basket is decorated with a complex woven geometric and figurative pattern. Squirrels are incorporated throughout the design, with a frog motif positioned between them. The top of the lid features motifs depicting tails of a small fish.. The interior of the basket is also decorated, showing human figures,
The basket is further enhanced with brightly colored feather decoration, carefully applied for visual impact and symbolic meaning. The sliding cover fits over the basket body, demonstrating a high level of technical skill.
