This is a traditional women’s keris from Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. It dates from the early 20th century. This small keris was made for women and typical for Central Java.
The keris has a wooden handle (ukiran) and a metal ring (mendak). The blade has three curves (three luks) representing a moving snake.
The sheath is made of wood (wrangka) with a metal cover (pendok) decorated with flowers and peacocks, symbols of beauty and femininity.
Keris like this were often worn during ceremonies or kept as personal heirlooms. They were believed to bring protection and spiritual power.
