Rare cassava or manioc grater made by the Waiwai people of the Amazon, known for their exceptional craftsmanship. Originating from Brazil, this piece dates to the mid-20th century and was once part of a Dutch collection. Made from carved wood, embedded stone fragments, and natural wax, this grater was used to process cassava (manioc), a staple in Amazonian diets. The surface is embedded with sharp stone pieces for grating efficiency. What makes this piece interesting is the spirit figure, which reflects the Waiwai's strong connection between utility and spirituality in their material culture. An example of Amazonian Tribal Art.
