Papua Sago Sieve
Sago sieve
Doberai Peninsula, West Papua
Leaf veins
Length: 39 cm, width: 19 cm
Collected c. 1950
Ex collection: A.M.
This traditional sago sieve from New Guinea comes from the Doberai Peninsula in the Bird’s Head region of West Papua. It was collected around 1950 and is an authentic example of everyday Papuan material culture.
The sieve is made from the leaf veins of the coconut palm tree, woven to create a strong and flexible filtering surface. These sieves were used in the preparation of sago, a staple food in New Guinea, to separate starch from fibrous pulp during processing.
