This traditional Ethiopian headrest was made by the Kambatta or Arussi people in southern Ethiopia. It is hand-carved from a single piece of wood with simple decorative lines and a smooth, worn patina from years of use. Headrests like this were used by men to support the head and neck while resting. They also helped protect carefully styled hair and were often carried everywhere by their owners. Headrest are also called ‘sleeping beauty’. An example of African tribal art, this headrest shows the skill and tradition of Ethiopian wood carving.
