This authentic Hampatong figure was carved by the Dayak people of Borneo in the early 20th century. It was made from wood and standing 92 cm tall, Traditionally it was placed in rice fields to protect the crops and ensure a good harvest. Hampatong figures are powerful symbols in Dayak culture, believed to guard against negative spirits and bring prosperity. This piece comes from the collection of Ursula Voorhuis and represents an example of Dayak tribal art from Kalimantan.
