Dutch auction house

This rice container is attributed to the Punan, a subgroup of the Dayak peoples of Central Borneo, and originates from the Mahakam River region. It dates to the first half of the 20th century.

The object is constructed from rattan using tightly executed wickerwork and plaiting techniques. It has a bottle-shaped profile with a narrow neck and wider body. Such containers were used for carrying rice during travel.

The weaving is regular and compact, indicating a high level of technical control. The surface shows a natural patina consistent with age and use.
