This hexagonal hat from Sumba, Indonesia, dates from the first half of the 20th century and is a striking example of traditional craftsmanship using lontar palm leaf. The hat features an intricate wickerwork structure woven with a refined three-line twining technique, characteristic of Sumbanese artisanal skill.
Atop the hat is a braided lontar leaf ornament, also created using the three-line system. The cylindrical decoration is built in three descending tiers, each adorned with six protruding points.
These hats were traditionally worn during ceremonial events and carry both cultural and aesthetic significance within Sumba society.
