19th century

Provenance: Jaap Hillenius Collection

This 19th-century tribal war club, known as a macana, comes from the Indigenous people of Guyana and Suriname in South America. Carved from dense hardwood, it features a decorative pattern of small pits across its surface. Clubs like this were used in tribal warfare and may also have served ceremonial or symbolic purposes. Its compact size and craftsmanship reflect traditional Amazonian weapon-making techniques.
